Eastern Endoscopy Centre
Our Story
Eastern Endoscopy Centre, located in Bayside suburb of Birkdale, is a Queensland Health licensed Day Hospital accredited with the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards. It was established in December 1999 and is currently owned and operated by Dr John Gibbons, a gastroenterologist with twenty years' experience.
Our Vision
Early detection and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases to minimize suffering and improve quality of life.
Our Mission
To provide an affordable high quality gastroenterology service to Brisbane's southeast.
Our Services
Endoscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy are all performed at the hospital.
Our Queensland Health License enables us to look after patients over the age of 14 years who are in relatively good general health.
Patients with more complex medical diseases, or with a BMI>40, are referred to Mater Private Hospital, South Brisbane, or Sunnybank Private Hospital under the care of our doctors. These diseases include significant cardiac and respiratory diseases, sleep apnoea, significant cognitive dysfunction, impaired mobility which precludes independent transfers and patients with pre-existing pressure injuries.
All four gastroenterologists consult at Eastern Endoscopy Centre in the spacious consulting room, providing a complete gastroenterological service.
Our Commitment to Quality
The Centre has prided itself on staying at the forefront of endoscopic practices by using the latest endoscopic equipment and by using the best practice guidelines for both endoscopic procedures and scope cleaning. We also endeavour to replace our equipment regularly to ensure that optimal quality is maintained and the most advanced technology is used.
We ensure that our staff, gastroenterologists and anaesthetists participate in continuing development programmes and meet quality guidelines as defined by the Australian and American Gastroenterological and Anaesthesiology Societies.
Our doctors attend monthly meetings to discuss clinical cases, review pathology diagnoses and evaluate recent advances in the literature. Quality guidelines for endoscopic procedures published by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) are monitored. In particular, the quality of colonoscopy is maintained with the use of the latest technology utilising computer aided detection of polyps through artificial intelligence.
Eastern Endoscopy Centre nurses regularly participate in continuing education programmes with regular mandatory assessments of nursing skills including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, fire and evacuation, endoscopic cleaning competencies and Hand Hygiene compliance.
We use a secure electronic messaging system to send your procedure reports back to your referring doctor, which enables rapid communication, enhancing the timeliness of your care.
